BYD electric dual-cab ute takes shape in new spy photos
There’s another electric ute on the way – this time from Chinese brand BYD – and it appears to have taken design inspiration from Ford’s top-selling pick-ups.
New spy photos have emerged showing the forthcoming BYD electric ute in greater detail than before.
Images published by Car News China show the BYD with a front end echoing the Ford Ranger and Ford F-150 Lightning – with a similar C-shaped design around the headlights – along with a large B-Y-D incorporated into the grille.
The as-yet unnamed BYD ute has been confirmed for Australia, after Luke Todd – boss of EVDirect, the importers of BYD locally – previously told Drive the vehicle was “on track for 2024”.
As previously reported by Drive, the ute is expected to share its underpinnings with the ‘SF’ off-road SUV.
Car News China reported the ute will be offered as either an electric or plug-in hybrid – with the latter expected to debut with a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine and dual electric motors.
Given the ute and the ‘SF’ SUV share the same architecture and have both been reported as electric in plug-in hybrid, there’s a good chance the hybrid ute could be offered with more than 500kW – a power figure already quoted by BYD for the SUV.

The SUV also comes with front, centre, and rear differential locks for increased traction off road.
Home-country rival LDV – the first brand to launch an electric ute in Australia with the eT60 – showed off its new electric ute last week, with 746kW claimed from four electric motors.
Along with the BYD and LDV, Ford will soon launch the petrol-powered F-150 pick-up in Australia, which could pave the way for the electric F-150 Lightning. Both Chevrolet and Ram have also committed to producing electric pick-ups – however, these are so far only confirmed for the US market.
